CENTRE WELLINGTON – The Rotary Club of Fergus Elora is working with the Elora and Salem Horticultural Society and the Fergus and District Horticultural Society to hold the first Canada Day house and garden decorating contest in the area.
It’s called the Centre Wellington Canada Day Front Garden Competition.
Grand prize will be $150 with additional $100 and $50 prizes for two homes in Elora and Salem and $100 and $50 prizes for two homes in Fergus for the best decorated homes entered in the competition.
The grand prize is for the best overall entry.
“We wanted to put this together so people could have some fun with their families in decorating their house and gardens and celebrate Canada Day,” said director of international service and past president of the Rotary Club of Fergus Elora Leanne Iravani.
“It’s been quite a year for all of us. We are hoping people in the community will get involved, get creative and have some fun.”
“This is something the whole family can get involved with,” said Dawn McClure, president of the Elora and Salem Horticultural Society.
“Grandparents, children and mom and dad. It doesn’t matter whether you live in an apartment, townhome or a house. We will be looking at all entries. The only stipulation is that it must be the front of the house or balcony if the entry is an apartment.”
The idea came from the Rotary Club of Fergus Elora, which wanted to put together something that contributed to the community in a way that made everyone feel good about Canada and of course, Fergus, Elora and Salem.
The club approached both horticulture societies, which embraced the idea and worked with Rotary to make it a reality.
“We are always looking for ways to contribute to our community,” said Connie Di Pisa, president of the Fergus and District Horticultural Society.
“This fit perfectly with what our volunteer organization stands for.”
The competition is not a garden contest even though the judging will be done by the horticultural societies.
It’s about how the entire house or apartment is decorated. It’s about the impact, overall look and feeling. The only stipulation is that it must be seen from the road.

Entries can be submitted until June 24.
Entries must include your name, full street address, email address and telephone number.
Entries will be judged by both the Elora Salem and the Fergus and District horticultural societies from June 25 to 29.
