MINTO – Carry-On Women’s Institute members kicked off the fall season on Sept. 15 by touring the winners of the Garden of the Year competition hosted by the Town of Minto and the Clifford and Harriston horticulture societies.
The winners were:
– Overall, the Hale family, Harriston;
– Runner up, Jean and Dirk Kramer, Harriston;
– Best Canadian Feature, Mary Rae Howick-Minto townline; and
– People’s Choice, Harry and Sharon Lines, Palmerston.
Each host welcomed 10 women into their yards and explained how their garden began, their plans for the future, and answered questions.
Pride and talent
“Their pride, their talent and their love of the oasis they have created could be seen and heard from them all,” institute officials state.
“We saw some of the most spectacular window boxes, unbelievable rock and water features, a hosta burm, raised gardens (two just for strawberries). We were introduced to many plants and trees.”
Carry-On thanked all the hosts for sending members away “inspired and exhausted just thinking about the hours spent in each garden.’
The afternoon of fresh air and walking ended with a meal at Gramma Jo’s restaurant in Clifford.
