The Fergus Grand Theatre “presenting” series is finally here.
In keeping with the theme of Canada’s 150th year, the season’s theme is Canada… Now and Then, with each show relating to Canadian history.
The new program at the Fergus Grand Theatre allows the theatre coordinator to select shows, contract artists and promote them, allowing the theatre to present new opportunities.
The three shows in this season’s line-up include The Great Canadian Songbook, Sugar and Gold: Stories from the Underground Railroad and Soldiers of Song. The theatre is offering these three shows in a season ticket package for a cost of only $75. Individually these performances would cost $35 a ticket.
The season kicks off on Nov. 15 with The Great Canadian Songbook, celebrating Canada’s musical history.
The show includes timeless classics from Stan Rogers and Stompin’ Tom to Blue Rodeo and The Barenaked Ladies, as well as original songs about this great country.
Canadian tenor Ken Lavigne will perform alongside the band Tiller’s Folly and alternative folk/indigenous artist Diyet. The show also marks the theatre’s grand re-opening after this summer’s renovations.
On Feb. 17 Diana Braithwaite and Chris Whiteley return to Fergus with a new show, Sugar and Gold: Stories from the Underground Railroad. This new musical features fascinating stories of the Underground Railroad, along with rare photographs, a rich historical backdrop and a musical score, with original songs.
The season closes on April 7 with Soldiers of Song. If nationhood was won on the crest of Vimy Ridge, it was the Dumbells who provided the country with its earliest soundtrack.
Formed by members of the Canadian army’s Third Division, The Dumbells bolstered troop morale during the First World War with live “concert parties” featuring irreverent humour that often skewered senior officers and the military system itself.
