The 59th Canadian Open Old Time Fiddle Championship takes place here Aug. 5 to 9.
Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Shelburne, with partners Dufferin Mutual Insurance Company and Forecast Group, the event features Canada’s top fiddlers in competition for over $17,000 in prizes.
Community events in conjunction with the championship include fiddle workshops, camping, a giant fiddle parade featuring the Toronto Police Winged Wheels, 24 hour meals at the Legion, an open air market, non-denominational church service and community pork barbecue.
On Aug. 6 at 7:30pm, the Shelburne Rotary Club welcomes Canadian Open Old Time Fiddle champion and Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle champion April Verch and her band. The show will feature Ottawa Valley step dancing, vocal selections, and numerous styles of fiddling.
The championship starts with the playdowns on Aug. 7 at 1 and 7 pm at the Centre Dufferin Recreation. Classes that will compete in the afternoon include the young (age 9 and under, ages 10 to 12) and 56 and over. The evening features the remaining classes.
The contest finals are on Aug. 8 at 6:30pm and will feature entertainment by several young fiddle and step dancing groups: The entertainment will start at 6:30pm.
