Canada Post releases Hanukkah stamp

OTTAWA – Canada Post has unveiled its latest stamp which commemorates the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah.

The stamp features an ornate 19th century hanukkiyah, a candelabra designed specifically for the Hanukkah candles.

Originally created in Poland, the silver-plated object is believed to have been rescued from a burning synagogue in Germany in November of 1938, around the time of widespread violence in Nazi-occupied territories.

“In the aftermath of World War II, military authorities recovered a vast amount of Jewish cultural and religious items,” said Louis Charbonneau, of the Aron Museum at Montréal’s Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom, in a press release.

The Aron Museum houses the hanukkiah on the stamp.
