Drayton Entertainment celebrates the Great Canadian Song Book with its eagerly anticipated world premiere production of Canadian Legends, on stage July 2 to 18 at the Dunfield Theatre Cambridge.
Designed as a showcase for the homespun charm of the irrepressible Neil Aitchison, one of Waterloo region’s most beloved local celebrities, this brand new production features a winning combination of side-splitting humour, razor-sharp political satire, lively dancing, and above all, memorable musical selections that celebrate all things uniquely Canadian.
Following the success of Sorry…I’m Canadian in 2013, which featured Aitchison as his alter ego, Constable Archibald F. Inkster, Drayton Entertainment’s artistic director Alex Mustakas started conceiving a new show which would further highlight signature anthems that have stood the test of time, and resonate with Canadians coast to coast.
The resulting Canadian Legends follows in the same vein of the award-winning theatre organization’s popular series of Legends tribute shows (Twist and Shout, Legends … of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Country Legends), by paying tribute to some of our country’s most iconic singers and musical pioneers – Anne Murray, Paul Anka, The Guess Who, Leonard Cohen, Gordon Lightfoot, Shania Twain, Michael Bublé, Celine Dion … even Justin Bieber.
“Canada has been blessed with a rich musical tapestry that has spanned the decades in terms of scope and worldwide influence,” said Mustakas. “This production celebrates those songwriters who charted a new musical direction in the early days and those Canadian sensations who dominate charts around the world today.”
Approximately 110 songs from such varied genres as country, rock, acoustic pop, folk and rockabilly are celebrated in this lightning-paced, high-octane production that proudly waves a maple leaf in honour of the true north, strong and free.
A talented cast, consisting of Michael Clarke, Gerrad Everard, Jennifer Kee, Shelley Kenney, Michel LaFleche, Laura Mae Nason, Chad McNamara, Yvan Pedneault, Lee Siegel, Valerie Stanois, Brett Taylor and Breanna Willis will wow theatregoers with their versatility as they bring these musical numbers to life through powerhouse vocals, heartfelt interpretations, and respectful homages.
Providing a welcome comedic interlude is Aitchison’s Mountie, whose hilarious musings on current events leaves no political party, pop star or public figure unscathed. The production snaps, crackles and pops with an acerbic wit that will surely resonate with audiences of all ages.
“Neil is really an incredible storyteller,” said Mustakas. “He’s the only guy who can spend two hours good-naturedly poking fun at Canadian idiosyncrasies, and then people turn around and beg for more ridicule.”
Ultimately though, following the bountiful laughs, audiences will leave the theatre completely uplifted, taking great pride in the tremendous depth and diversity of musical talent the country has nourished throughout the decades.
Mustakas leads the creative team as director, bringing both the music and humour to life. Orchestrations and vocal arrangements are by robert foster, who has worked with Mustakas on past Legends tribute shows. Choreography is by Gino Berti, with music direction by Michael Lerner. Set and lighting design is by Jeff JohnstonCollins, and costume design is by Jessica Bray with video elements by Peter Conrad and Steve Kelly.
Regular performance tickets are $42 for adults and $25 for youth under 20 years of age. Tickets for preview performances scheduled before the official opening and groups of 20 or more are $34. HST is applicable to all ticket prices.
