Buying Canadian products, services priority for Mapleton township

MAPLETON – “Local first, Ontario next, Canada, and then the rest of the world if we have to.”

That’s what Mayor Gregg Davidson said about the township’s priorities in where it sources its products and services.

Councillor Michael Martin brought the topic up at the end of a regular meeting of council on Feb. 11, noting “There’s a saying that says ‘Who needs enemies when you have friends like these?’”

Martin asked CAO Manny Baron what, if anything, the township is doing to review its purchasing.

“Geopolitics are a thing,” he said, before asking “Are we conducting a review?”

Baron said “That’s an amazing question” and noted he had been in conversation about it with township finance director Patrick Kelly and public works director Jamie Morgan about it earlier that week.

“We will begin the exercise of (looking into) where are we purchasing our products and things like that,” Baron said.

“At first glance, there’s not a whole lot that we’re doing but we are going to go through the exercise and purchase as much from Canada as we possibly can.”
