Wellington County OPP officials say officers were busy over the Victoria Day long weekend.
Through proactive patrol and enforcement, police say the OPP raised awareness surrounding the “big four” major causes of death and injuries on Ontario roads: impaired driving, aggressive driving, distracted driving and failure to wear or improper use of seatbelts. The results from the weekend enforcement are:
– 158 speeding charges;
– three distracted driving charges;
– three impaired drivers;
– three careless driving; and
– five seatbelt charges.
The Victoria Day long weekend always brings a higher volume of traffic on road, trails and waterways. There were six collisions investigated, one of which involved alcohol and resulted in minor injuries to two people.
“Officers were highly visible educating and enforcing provincial and federal legislation,” said Wellington County OPP detachment commander Scott Lawson. “It’s always important to recognize … the efforts of those motorists who contribute to everyone’s safety … Our hope is that this safety-first mindset continues over the busy summer months.”
