CENTRE WELLINGTON – Fergus and Elora firefighters responded to a fire on Sideroad 14, just west of 4th Line near Ariss, on Jan. 11, but the fire was too involved and the building could not be saved.
Centre wellington deputy fire chief Jonathan Karn said the building was a 30- by 50-foot wooden barn that was used as a repair shop by James Thoume Construction Ltd., whose main operation is conducted from another building on the site.
Employees called 911 just before 10am after attempting to put out the fire with fire extinguishers.
“It was an old, wooden-style barn,” Karn said. “It certainly didn’t take long to spread through the building.”
Karn said Guelph and Maryhill fire departments assisted with extra tankers and fire crews were wrapping up before 1pm.
“The only damage was to the building itself. No other buildings or equipment were affected and there were no injuries,” Karn said, adding cause of the fire had not yet been determined.
Karn said an excavator was on site to dismantle the building to ensure the fire was out and there would be no flare ups.
