Building construction value double 10-year average

Construction in Wellington North has seen a spike in value in 2017, nearly doubling the 10-year average.

In a report to council on Sept. 11, chief building official Darren Jones stated the year-to-date construction value is $31.9 million, with 179 building permits being issued. Wellington North has collected over $274,000 in permit fees and $687,500 in development charges since Jan. 1.

The 10-year for the same period is 164 permits with a construction value of around $16.7 million.

“We’re about double in terms of construction value this year, than what we would typically see, largely due to commercial, industrial, institutional,” said Jones.

“We haven’t been seeing much of that in the past few years.”

In August, the township issued 37 permits with a construction value of about $4.9 million.

This includes 14 multi-family dwellings and seven agricultural buildings.

Council accepted the report for information.
