Bowling event becomes baking event for BBBS

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Centre Wellington changes gears to offer Bake for Kids Sake

CENTRE WELLINGTON – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Centre Wellington has cancelled its Bowl For Kids Sake event and is now holding Bake for Kids Sake instead.

“We had to get creative,” said Kelly Legge, development coordinator of the agency.

“Once COVID-19 forced us to cancel Bowl for Kids, we came up with this.”

Bowl for Kids is the single biggest fundraiser for the agency, raising approximately $20,000 each year.

Bake for Kids Sake will be similar in that teams or individuals must enter and then collect pledges.

But the baking will be done in your own home, with photographs of the masterpieces that will be judged.

Baked items can be anything – cakes, cookies, pies, brownies – but with a graduation theme.

“We think it’s fitting to celebrate our youth who are missing graduations this year,” Legge said.

Some participants plan on giving their entry to a graduating student after the contest.

Registration is open and once you get your pledge page set up, the donations can begin pouring in.

Bake Day is June 13 and winners will be announced June 15.

There will also be prizes for the top winners in each of three categories: family, youth and adult. The top fundraiser will receive a Kitchenaid tilt-stand mixer, valued at $450.

Big Brother Big Sisters is known as the organization that matches “bigs” with “littles” for a positive mentor/mentee relationship.

These relationships have continued virtually during lockdown measures. But fundraising opportunities have dried up, and they are needed to keep the programs going.
