In events in Fergus and Guelph, local residents recently raised $29,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Centre Wellington.
The events were at Victoria Park Seniors Centre in Fergus on Feb. 26 and Woodlawn Bowl in Guelph on Feb. 28.
Executive director Jane Cooper said the 2016 goal was to raise $40,000 – but BBBS of Centre Wellington will continue to accept sponsorship until the end of March.
She noted the money raised supports BBBS programs such as the one-to-one program where a Big Brother or Big Sister is matched with a child. Those individuals share their lives by taking the child out each weekend or every other week.
“It can make such a hug difference in the child’s life. It’s a neat thing to see,” said Cooper .
She added that in the 26 years she has been involved in the organization, “I’ve seen many children who have benefitted so much from having that one person in their life to encourage them and cheer them on.”
She noted the age of the Little Brothers Little Sisters ranges from five to 18, “but the friendships can last a lifetime.”
Cooper used the example of a wedding she attended last year of a Little Brother she helped to match. He’s come back and started volunteering.
She said the Big Brother was in the wedding party and his little girl was a flower girl in the wedding – “It’s just wonderful to see these things.”
Cooper added BBBS also has programs within the school setting, in addition to programs for Grade 7 and 8 students.
She thanked all those participating for their help.
