Book takes sweet fundraiser on ice to support Patriots

The Patriots Junior C hockey club has a fundraiser they hope will leave a good taste with their supporters and garner new ones.

The Patriots are selling a dessert cookbook featuring some 69 recipes with everything from butter tarts to cookies and, at the same time, teaming up with Wellington North’s Butter Tart Trail program.

“We put out a request to the community so we have various recipes,” Pam McLellan-Zmija of the Patriots executive said. “They’re all desserts and there is a section for kids.”

The cookbooks are selling for $10 each and the team has a preliminary printing of 250 copies. All proceeds go to support the team.

The project was initiated by township tourism, marketing, promotions manager April Marshall.

“There were discussions with a few organizations, but the project didn’t fit with their mandate,” Marshall said. “I then approached the Pats, as I know Pam personally, and remember they had put out a recipe book a couple of years ago; therefore, making this a nice continuation.”

“They had experience on this type of project and were eager to work with us,” Marshall added.

“This sweet project is the official recipe book for the Butter Tart Trail,” Marshall said. “Who doesn’t like a rich, decadently-sinful butter tart and now you can not only discover many variations on the 100 km road tour, but you can also try making different variations at home.”

“It’s a great way to get our residents involved with the Butter Tart Trail, not only by having submitted their family recipes, but also to support a local organization,” Marshall  added.

Books are for sale at JJ McLellan and Son, Spoil Me Pets, and The Raven’s Rune in Mount Forest, The Plumber’s Wife and Labelle Flowers in Arthur, the Kenilworth Country Kitchen and the township office in Kenilworth.

In addition, the book is also being given out as a prize to those that participate in the Butter Tart Trail passport program when 12 of the 16 stops along the trail are visited.

The Butter Tart Trail was recently named as a top 10 destination by the National Post.
