Book Sale raises record funds for Elora Festival

ELORA – The Annual Giant Book Sale returned to the Elora Curling Club May 6 to 8 after a two-year absence due to COVID restrictions.

The Book Sale has been raising funds for the Elora Festival since 1989, starting out as a small sale and eventually moving to its current location.

Book sellers and avid readers came from far and wide to stock up on summer reading and replenish their bookshelves, and they weren’t disappointed.

With over 60,000 books donated to the book depot prior to the start of the pandemic and over the past few months, there was something for everyone. This year’s Book Sale raised $60,000 for the Elora Festival, bringing the total funds raised since 1989 to just over $1 million.

“Over the 30-plus years the book sale has existed it has grown and grown and is now a force of its own,” said Peter Barr, the Elora Festival’s board chair.

“Thousands of volunteer hours throughout the year have created tremendous support for the Elora Festival and for the community as a whole. It’s truly amazing.”

Over 100 volunteers work throughout the year and over the weekend of the sale.

This year, officials note  positive energy was palpable, with a real sense of joy and the return to a familiar and wonderful community event.

“Volunteers are the heartbeat of our community and the board and staff of the Elora Festival are so grateful to each and every one of the volunteers for their time and generosity in helping,” officials say, as the Elora Festival plans for its first live Festival in three years from July 8 to 24.
