Board approves contract for new Rockwood school

Due to a  “tight” schedule, the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) has granted conditional approval of the contract for the new public school in Rockwood.

At their meeting last Tuesday, trustees awarded the contract for the new two-storey, 34,000 square-foot school to Tambro Construction for about $6.26 million.

Twelve contractors were pre-qualified to bid on the lump sum construction tender and Tambro Construction was awarded the contract on a conditional basis.

“Staff did not find any irregularities in their review of the tenders and Tambro will be awarded the contract subject to the architect’s detailed written analysis and recommendation,” the board stated in a press release following the Sept. 24 meeting.

“Timing to build the school is tight and it was necessary to get conditional approval from trustees at this time. The final project budget is approximately $6.26 million, conditional on confirmation of the detailed tender analysis.”

The school will be built on a property at the end of MacLennan Street in Rockwood’s south end. It will hold 308 students and alleviate overcrowding at Rockwood Centennial Public School.

The board wants the new school completed by September 2014.
