June 8 to 14 is National Blood Donor Week, and, as Canadians gear up for summer, Canadian Blood Services reminds everyone this is the perfect time to donate blood before the annual vacation rush strikes.
Organizers suggest people can revel in the rush they will get from donating blood and saving lives this June – and they get cookies.
Canadian Blood Services supplies blood and blood components to 169 hospitals in Ontario, and 58 of them in the central Ontario region. Last year in Ontario, 795,400 units of blood and blood products were needed by patients for everything from trauma surgery to cancer treatment.
Blood or blood products are required by patients in Canada every minute of every day. One traffic accident victim may need up to 50 units of blood or blood product to survive.
There is no substitute for blood and there is no substitute for blood donors.
The next clinic here is at the Mount Forest and District Recreation Complex on June 2, from 2 to 4pm. No appointment is necessary.
