The theatre here begins it new year with bittersweet-romantic comedy and it opens on Valentine’s Day.
Meet Toby Boone. He is a middle-aged film critic.
Alone, depressed, and “at the end of his rope” he comes across a photo of his first love, Marisa. He has not seen her since he was 13 years old, at summer camp. Feeling he has nothing to lose, he throws caution – and common sense – to the wind and sets out on the ultimate – and most universal fantasy – to discover what-might-have-been.
Rope’s End was written by Douglas Bowie, most well known for the high profile television and movie scripts he has penned, including: the epic mini-series Chasing Rainbows (starring Paul Gross and Michael Riley) and the major motion picture The Boy in Blue (starring Nicholas Cage). He is currently playwright-in-residence at Thousand Islands Playhouse, in Gananoque, and lives in Kingston.
Starring in Rope’s End are the husband and wife team of Sharron Matthews and George Masswohl.
Audiences will remember Masswohl as the loveable ex-con, Stewart, in the first production of the season, One Moment, by Norm Foster and Steve Thomas. Masswohl has also played the lead in Sweeny Todd for CanStage and Beast in Beauty and the Beast for Neptune Theatre.
Matthews has an extensive theatre and film career, and has been on stage in the American National tour of Les Miserables and on film in several major motion pictures such as Hairspray (with John Travolta); Mean Girls (with Lindsay Lohan); and Take the Lead (with Antonio Banderas).
Rope’s End is a bittersweet romantic tale that will warm an audience’s heart and make it laugh. Theatre organizers are suggesting to “see it with someone you love.”
Rope’s End opens February 14 and runs until March 2.
