There were two-wheelers, three-wheelers and even six-wheelers on hand for the Optimist Club of Centre Wellington’s Bike Safety Rodeo, held on June 1 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
“The structure of the event is to start off with a bike safety training video that offers instruction, for things such as hand signals and signs, and then Wellington County OPP Auxiliary Sergeant Brad Hull will speak to the children,” said volunteer organizer Patrick O’Neil.
He explained that the event has been running for several years, always with the goal to teach children bike safety skills such as hand signals, basic mobility skills, and observation techniques to ensure a safe ride.
“We target the event to children aged five to 12 years,” O’Neil said.
After watching the short video presentation, Sergeant Hull offered a question and answer segment with the children, before they get to experience a mock-up skills course.
“The bike safety course has five different stations,” said O’Neil.
At the end of the event, the children were allowed to explore the police cruiser and ask questions.
