It was a solemn service as local residents gathered in front of their community cenotaph last Sunday to remember those who gave their lives in defence of Canada.
A large crowd gathered at the site following church services at Belwood United Church. Presenting the colours were members of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 275, Fergus.
Rev. Katherine Gregory, of St. Johns United Church, welcomed members of the community to the service of remembrance.
“We gather around this cenotaph erected by the community of West Garafraxa, as we hold up their names in honour of those who went to war. And it calls to mind those who are still fighting for peace and justice on behalf of Canada,” she said. “Today we remember our beloved boys who laid down their lives in the great war for freedom and liberty.”
She followed up with the reading of the names of those who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars.
Memorial wreaths were laid as Remembrance Day Song by Nigel J.C. Turnbull was performed by Al Sansford on guitar.
