Belwood Lake Sailing Club hosted the Wellington Cup Regatta this year on Fathers’ Day.
This event is an annual sailing challenge between Belwood Lake Sailing Club (BLSC), Conestoga Sailing Club (CSC) and Guelph Community Boating Club (GCBC). The format of the competition involves boats from all three clubs racing at the same time using the Portsmouth rating handicap tables.
There is a Club Team Cup, but the Wellington Cup itself for the individual winning boat is the coveted prize. The format encourages both club participation and individual performances in an informal setting where all are winners by enjoying a day on the water, this year at Belwood Lake.
Andy Blackmore from BLSC was the race committee chair, assisted by many members of BLSC in capacities both on and off the water.
Seventeen boats made up the racing fleet this year which included international, national and local skippers and crews. The weather cooperated with wind speeds up to 15km/hour from the south west and warm water temperatures. Participants ranged from 10 years old to 85 years young.
The Club Team Cup this year went to Belwood Lake Sailing Club. The third place individual prizes went to Richard and Colin King from BLSC sailing their Y-Flyer, second place went to Julian and Oliver Inglis (GCBC) in their Snipe and the first place prizes and the Wellington Cup were won by the team of Harri Palm and Molly Kurvink (GCBC) also in a Snipe. Congratulations to all the winners.
Debbie Madden, the BLSC Commodore, presented the cups and prizes with past Commodore Al Sullivan assisting.
The barbecue that followed at the newly renovated clubhouse closed a memorable day of sailing. Many were the stories told of the events that had unfolded during the day.
The BLSC holds club races Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons during the season. For those that are interested in following the activities of the club, visit their website: www.blsc.on.ca.
