Bears spotted near Belwood on Saturday

Police are asking residents to exercise caution after two bears were spotted here on Saturday.

On June 3 at about 5:40pm Wellington County OPP received a call about a possible bear sighting.

Police say an officer saw a mother bear and cub in the area of East-West Garafraxa Townline near Dobbin Street on the east edge of Belwood at about 7pm.

"OPP have not been able to contain the bear, however have notified local residents of the sighting," police stated in a press release.

Police officials, who are working with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) on the matter, are reminding residents to exercise caution if they see the bears.

"Residents can help minimize risk of an encounter by removing or controlling access to things that attract hungry bears, like bird or pet food and garbage as well as grease and food residue on barbeques," police stated.

For non-emergencies, the MNRF operates a toll-free, 24/7 bear reporting line (1-866-514-2327). In case of an emergency call 911.
