GUELPH – Naomi Smith, from the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation in Neyaashiinimiing, is leading a two-day beaded poppy workshop on Nov. 9 and 10.
The workshop will be held in the Coach House at McCrae House in Guelph and will focus on the practices of beading and Remembrance in the story of Lt. Col. John McCrae and the First World War.
It takes place between Indigenous Veterans Day on Nov. 8, and Remembrance Day on Nov. 11.
Participants will create an embossed beaded poppy pin or pendant using traditional teachings and will receive an introduction to Indigenous raised beading techniques as well as how to work with deer hide.
“For over 25 years, Naomi has focussed on sharing teachings about the Indigenous people of the Woodlands and Northeastern region, from historical and contemporary perspectives, often through the story of beads,” Guelph Museums officials state.
All ages are welcome however officials recommend those 12 years and older.
Comfort with hand sewing is an asset and participants should bring a basic sewing kit, including a beading mat, small flat nose pliers, small scissors, thimble, and a magnifying glass.
Lunch is not provided or included but participants are welcome to bring a bagged lunch or pick up lunch in the area.
