BBBSCW raises $50,000 at ‘Big Night In’ virtual gala

CENTRE WELLINGTON – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Centre Wellington (BBBSCW) raised $50,000 at its virtual gala, called the Big Night In, on March 13.

The event had 293 participants join the online event from as far away as Australia, Saskatchewan and Timmins, Ontario.

“Planning this event definitely had its challenges with a new platform, new processes and protocols to follow,” said Pam Stumpf, board chair of BBBSCW.

“But as always, the community came together to make our Big Night In a great success.

“I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the planning committee and to everyone who contributed to the event’s success. To everyone that attended, near and far, thank you. We could not do what we do without all of you and your support.”

Funds were raised through ticket sales, auctions, games and donations.

The Outstanding Little Award went to Leigha Starkey who has been a Little Sister with BBBSCW since 2012.

Leigh’s Big Sister, Alicia Benham, has supported her through several life challenges while Leigha has grown to be a more confident, contributing community member who has forged  stronger relationships with those close to her.

Officials say Neil Armstrong, former board chair, was awarded The Big Star Award for his unwavering commitment to the organization for over a decade and the positive impact he had on the community.

Each Big Brother Big Sister agency enables mentoring relationships between Bigs and Littles, to ignite the power and potential of young people, officials note.

In 2020, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Centre Wellington served almost 250 children and supported approximately 100 volunteers in Belwood, Fergus, Elora, Salem, Alma and Ponsonby.
