GUELPH – A Barrie firm has been awarded the contract to refine the design for Wellington County’s proposed Continuum of Care seniors community project.
On Sept. 26 county council authorized the move to issue an RFP to retain an architect in a limited role to refine the project design and retain a cost consultant.
Nine submissions were received in response to a two-stage RFP, which required proponents to provide a lump sum price to complete a schematic design to achieve an estimate for the completion of the construction budget for the project. Phase 2 required proponents to provide a fee, based on percentage of construction costs, to provide architectural services for detailed design, specification development, tender call and construction management of the project.
A selection committee short-listed five of the responding firms for interviews and at the Nov. 28 meeting, councillor Mary Lloyd, chair of the information, heritage and seniors committee, presented a report recommending the county retain Salter Pilon Architecture Inc. for Phase 1 of the project. The company submitted a quote of $363,000 for Phase 1 and 4.94 per cent of total construction for Phase 2.
County council approved a resolution awarding the contract for Phase 1 to Salter Pilon Architecture Inc.
The contract for Phase 2 will be awarded if the Continuum of Care project, which preliminary estimates have pegged at $88 million, is approved.
Committee struck
A committee consisting of members of the information, heritage and seniors committee, the chair of the administration and finance committee and county staff has been formed to work with the firm in developing the design.
In the 2019 budget, the county approved spending $1 million for exploratory studies related to the project, which would include the Phase 1 work.
