The Grand River Mustangs Bantam BB hockey team took home gold in the Barrie Sharkfest Tournament Nov. 13 to 15.
The Mustangs opened the tournament with a 2-0 win over the Scarborough Sharks, followed by at 1-0 victory over the Guelph Gryphons. Next was a commanding 3-0 win over the Peterborough Ice Kats. In the final round robin game the Mustangs defeated the Barrie Sharks 2-0.
Goalie Kamryn Wilson and her defense, consisting of Sophia Battaglia, Grace Smith, Rachel Patterson, Alexis Kent, and MacKenzie Goodfellow, posted four shutouts heading into the final.
In the championship game the Mustangs captured gold against familiar foes, the Barrie Sharks, with a tight 2-1 win.
Points in the tournament (goals, assists) went to: Frances Wolkensperg (5,1), Frances McKnight (1,3), Tianna Dietrich (1,2), Marisa Mulvey (2,0), Allison Campbell (1,1), Brianna Redwood (0,2), Tessa Humber (0,2), Sophia Battaglia (0,1), Alexis Kent (0,1), Alyssa Montgomery (0,1), Rachel Patterson (0,1), Grace Smith (0,1).
So far this season the Mustang Bantam BBs are undefeated despite major injuries to key players, defenceman Grace Smith and goalie Leah Fogarty.
The girls have a 14-0-7 record. This is their second tournament win as the Bantam BBs also brought home the gold in the pre-season Niagara Rapids Tournament in Niagara Falls from Sept. 25 to 27.
