The TD Bank Group has donated $100,000 to the Red Cross to assist victims of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan last week.
The funds will be donated through the Red Cross to help the Japanese Red Cross Society.
“While details are still emerging, it is clear that this is a massive disaster and we want to offer some assistance on behalf of our customers and employees,” said Scott Mullin, vice-president of community relations.
TD is directing its donation to the Red Cross to support recovery efforts as well as provide shelter and comfort stations for area residents forced out of their homes
Local TD Canada Trust branches have also set up accounts where people can make a donation. There are TD Canada Trust branches in Fergus, Elora, Arthur, Erin and Mount Forest.
Paul Amaral, of the TD Canada Trust regional office in London, said the bank branches will be accepting only money.
“In most cases, we don’t accept goods. We rely on the Red Cross to do that for us. They do a great job.”
He added donations right now can make the quickest impact in Japan, where thousands were killed.
Sandra Hoing, of the Arthur branch, said the account at that branch is already set up; all people have to do is go to their branch and make a donation.
