Two international stars and other guests will share the stage with the Guelph Concert Band for the family-friendly show From Havana to Guelph at the River Run Centre at 3pm on Feb. 22.
Conductor Chris Cigolea and the Guelph Concert Band will perform with Cuban trumpeter-singer Bobby Carcasses, Russian ballerina Ekaterina Tikanova, Guelph singer Mary Duquesnay, and St. John’s Kilmarnock Jazz Band.
Carcasses, a top name in the world jazz scene, is famous for his diversity as a singer, songwriter and instrumentalist and for his contributions to Latin jazz. He is a founding organizer of the Jazz Plaza Festival in Cuba and has been inducted into the Jazz and Blues Hall of Fame.
Tikanova was born in Russia where she studied ballet at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy. She has danced with both the Bolshoi and the Russian Imperial Ballet Company.
Guelph’s songstress Duquesnay is known for her many musical roles. The SJK Jazz Band won the gold medal at the 2014 Kiwanis festival.
The Guelph Concert Band, which dates from 1878, will perform by itself as well as play with the guest artists.
The program will include George Gershwin’s Cuban Overture, Arturo Sandoval’s Mis Abuelos (Malaguena), Dizzy Gillespie’s Manteca, Consuelo Velazques’ Besame Mucho and music by Stevie Wonder.
