Arthur OPP office may move to fire hall

An OPP community office may be on the move.

As part of the minutes of Wellington North Township’s property committee, there was note the township has yet to obtain an update from Lynda White of the Wellington County Police Services Board about a possible OPP move from the former Arthur municipal building to the Arthur fire hall.

Councillor Ross Chaulk said the move “would then give the Arthur Historical Society more room, which they sorely need.”

Mayor Mike Broomhead said he thought that was all agreed upon and resolved.

Chaulk said the item was on hold until the committee had heard from White.

Broomhead said he believes the proposal was already agreed to at the county level.

Councillor John Matusinec asked if the OPP would pay rent – in an agreement similar to the ambulance service which rents space in the building.

Broomhead said it depends on what type of agreement is developed. He said in the past, the municipality has paid for some of the expenses such as the telephone.

“I assume it’s still to be negotiated.”

Broomhead said it would need to be discussed with staff and the OPP and recommendations brought forward.

He agreed there is no lease agreement in place right now.

Matusinec then asked if the fire committee had been made aware of the plans.

Chaulk said the idea has been in the works for over half a year. Broomhead agreed there are still issues that need to be addressed.
