Wellington North council held a moment of silence on July 24 for two valued Arthur community members who recently passed away.
Mary Schmidt, 63, died on July 17 and Ivan Fair, 88, died three days later.
“Those two people were wonderful people, great advocates for their community,” said councillor Dan Yake.
Schmidt owned and operated Arthur Travel Service Limited for 30 years. She was active in the Arthur Chamber of Commerce and served as chair of the Saugeen Economic Development Corporation.
“She was relentless in her pursuit of making the village of Arthur what it is,” said Yake.
“She did a wonderful job.”
Fair was a volunteer firefighter for Arthur fire station for 50 years, said Yake.
“He’ll be sorely missed,” Yake said. “He was a valuable member of the fire department for that time and the past few years he’s just been kind of helping out around the station.”
Mayor Andy Lennox said Schmidt and Fair both “epitomized the definition of citizenship.”
Funerals were held for Schmidt and Fair on July 22 and 24 respectively.
