Wellington County is on track to get another Business Improvement Area (BIA).
Wellington North council chose to create a new BIA for Arthur on Dec. 16 and on Jan. 29, an open house was planned to let the community know about the new organization.
The purpose of a BIA is to improve, beautify and maintain land owned by the municipality, as well as buildings and structures beyond what the municipality supplies.
Council had some pushback from business owners who did not think a BIA was the best idea.
What will happen to other groups like the Arthur and Area Chamber of Commerce or the horticultural society, which has been in charge of the flowers lining the streets in the summer? Those are questions that I don’t think have yet been answered.
While it makes sense to have one specific organization responsible for the beautification of the town, I think Wellington North needs to tread lightly to ensure no one feels that their toes are being trampled.
If I had dedicated my time and talents to say creating and maintaining beautiful flower planters for the past number of years, I think I’d be quite offended if a municipality stepped in and said, “We know better. We’re going to create a group that will now be in charge of that.”
In a small town everyone needs to work together and there’s a limited pool of people to draw from for all of these different organizations.
I hope Wellington North has a plan to appease everyone. It would be unfortunate to create unnecessary turmoil.
