Arnott thanks MTO for dropping contentious GTA west highway plan

The Ontario Minister of Transportation has decided to end consideration of a contentious option of the GTA West Corridor Study.

The Town of Halton Hills was informed of the decision in a meeting between Transportation Minister Bob Chiarelli and Mayor Rick Bonnette recently. That decision came a day after Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott tabled a resolution in the Ontario Legislature calling upon the minister to publicly announce it would not proceed with that option.

Arnott made a statement in the legislature May 17 afternoon, passing along the thanks of the community.

“On behalf of the people of Wellington-Halton Hills, I want to thank the Minister of Transportation for his decision to cancel Alternative 4-3 of the GTA West Corridor Study,” Arnott said.

He also recognized local efforts in achieving this outcome. “I want to thank the countless individuals who have worked so tirelessly to bring about this resolution. The Town of Halton Hills council and Halton Regional council, and the members of CRASHH, especially Wendy Bruchal, for all the work that they have done. “This victory belongs to them,” he added.

Arnott has worked persistently to bring attention to the issue in the legislature. In addition to that week’s resolution, he raised it in the legislature on multiple occasions, including directing questions to the premier in question period and delivering a member’s statement outlining local concerns.

Other measures he has taken include writing and speaking directly to the Minister of Transportation and the Premier, drafting a petition, and pushing for a briefing with senior officials at the Ministry of Transportation.
