Applications open for Amazing Race fundraiser

The Southern Ontario Amazing Race (SOAR) is now accepting racer applications.

SOAR is a two-day, clue-based, adventure race across southern Ontario.

Similar to the network television show The Amazing Race, SOAR challenges teams of two to numerous physical and mental challenges.

The race is to be held on June 6 to 8 and will test racers strengths, where they will experience the best of southern Ontario’s cities and landscapes.

Past racer Mike Pinkney raced in 2008, 2009, 2010 as well as last year in 2013. He wrote, SOAR “is one of the best organized and meticulously thought-out races I have experienced.”

In 2009 and 2010 Pinkney and his teammate Jay Hahn finished in first place. In 2013, John and Amanda Stevens came in first place. “SOAR truly is an experience of a lifetime that pushes racers to their physical and mental limits and it’s all for a great cause that makes a difference in the lives of families and children in Guelph and Wellington,” the couple said. SOAR is the single largest fundraiser for the Children’s Foundation of Guelph Wellington.

Glenna Banda, director of the Children’s Foundation said, “In 2012, the total raised dropped slightly from the previous year to $68,000. Last year, we were astonished by the success of the 10-year anniversary race which raised $144,000.”

The funds raised were used to provide financial assistance for children so that they can participate in Sports, cultural and recreational activities.

“In 2004, less than 100 children were receiving financial assistance and in 2013 over 1,000 were helped,” said Banda.

With the application period open until Feb. 15, interested racers are invited to submit a written application and an optional video describing why they should be included in the race. To learn more about the Southern Ontario Amazing Race, visit the website at www.therace.ca.
