Alt Burns 4, an alternative Robert Burns fundraiser, is re-imagining haggis to celebrate Scotland’s national poet.
Athol Gow and Jason Thompson are two local residents with an interest in unique food and beverage experiences. A few years ago they started organizing events to promote local creative food and drink.
In the fall, the “Craft Brew Rendezvous” offers a tour of local, craft breweries. In the winter, the pair organizes an alternative Robbie Burns supper which follows the “thread” of a Robbie Burns Supper – but the focus is on the “re-imagined” haggis by four local chefs.
Each chef prepares single servings of their respective take on haggis for attendees to enjoy with neeps, tatties and “unique” scotch pairings.
This year, as an addition to Peter Skoggard’s take on the Burns persona featuring the bard’s incantations and musings, a few of Burn’s “jilted lovers” will have their say – a gender balancing in the form of rebuttal to some of Burns’ poems.
Alt Burns 4 is set for Jan. 27 at 6pm at Shepherd’s Pub in Elora. Tickets are $60 and available at Fraberts Fresh Food, Café Serenity, Santé Elora, Shepherd’s Pub Elora or via jason.thompson@uwaterloo.ca or agow@uoguelph.ca.
All proceeds will be donated to the Centre Wellington Community Foundation’s Community Fund.
