Alsfeldt rink wins Clifford Foodgrains Curling Bonspiel

Lorne Underwood welcomed 16 teams of curlers to the Clifford Foodgrains Curling Bonspiel on March 3.

The bonspiel, held at the Clifford arena, is a competition.

All skill levels were welcomed and a trophy was awarded at the end of the day.

This year the trophy went to the Alsfeldt team of Ron McIntosh, Carman Weppler, Bev Schenk and Brian Damm.

First time curler Oriol Maller-Roig from Spain was a spectator watching from the stands for the Clifford Rotary Bonspiel held in February.

A month later, when invited to give the stones a toss, Maller-Roig joined a team and participated in the Clifford Foodgrains Curling Bonspiel.

This bonspiel also gave seasoned curlers their first chance to curl on arena ice.

It gave people the opportunity to curl in support of the Clifford-Oakville growing project of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFB).

The CFB is a partnership of 15 Canadian churches and church-based agencies working together to end global hunger.

Guest speaker

Curlers enjoyed a luncheon of pulled pork on a bun, chili, soup and dessert prepared by Ellen and Arthena Underwood.

After lunch, guest speaker Ray Dykstra discussed the Community Project Leaders Study Tour to Ethiopia from Jan. 27 to Feb. 8.

Ray and Anita Dykstra are active in the Bethel project in Listowel.
