Residents here can look forward to another all-way stop intersection in town.
At Centre Wellington’s Jan. 17 committee of the whole meeting, Public Works Director Ken Elder pitched the idea of an all-way stop to councillors.
Like residents in the area of the neighbourhood of Steven Way and Gourlay Road “we’ve had some road safety concerns for a number of years.
“One of the concerns is, the lack of driver reaction time to safely turn onto Steven Way from the current stop sign on Gourlay Road. A stopped driver who attempts a right, or left turn from Gourlay Rd. onto Steven Way has difficultly completing the turn due to sight distance issues.
“If anyone’s been in the area, there are two fairly large coniferous trees on the southeast corner – one of them on township property,” Elder said.
He added the curve of the street also adds to the sight line issues. The other concern with the current Gourlay Road and Steven Way intersection is that pedestrians have difficulty safely crossing Steven Way from the Gourlay Road sidewalk.
Elder added, “they tend to speed down Stephen Way as well. We don’t have documentation of that, but from what people see, it is the case.”
To mitigate potential traffic collisions and increase driver and pedestrian safety, he felt a new all-way stop intersection will improve the operational safety of the intersection.
Councillors quickly adopted the recommendation. Elder noted the situation would continue to be monitored.
