Additional space is allowed for Palmerston Curling Club

The parks and recreation committee here has recommended that Minto allow the Palmerston Curling Club to use its liquor sales license to serve liquor out of the club’s bar, and allow patrons to enter the auditorium with that liquor at their fundraising dinner.

The recommendation is subject to the club’s successful application for a licence extension from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission.

Councillor David Turton said the resolution explains it fairly well.

He said what the curling club wants to do is hold a fundraiser, including a silent auction, to raise money for the curling club.

Turton said this is a unique situation, since the club has its own bar.

They want to use the community centre basically as an overflow, with the silent auction items set up for viewing.

Turton said there quite a discussion at the committee about the request. While he agreed it is different, he did not consider it the same as someone wanting to set up an event.

Recreation Director Dave Stonley said the area the group originally wanted to hold the function in is not large enough, and the club was looking for additional space to spill over  to – so they have the size to run their function.

Mayor Anderson said he hopes to see many events like that.
