A water service interruption is necessary to complete emergency repairs to watermain infrastructure. To minimize any impacts on downtown businesses and residents, this work will be completed overnight, beginning on April 27 at midnight to 5am on April 28.
The work includes a full water shutdown on both the north and south sides of St. Andrew St. from the intersection of Tower St. N. to St. David Street and on St. David St. N. from the bridge crossing to St. Patrick St. This work will cause some overnight construction noise in downtown Fergus.
Staff are delivering letters to the affected home and business owners to advise them of the work being completed overnight.
Due to the nature of this work, there is a possibility that neighbouring residents and businesses may experience discoloured water. The discolouration is caused from iron and manganese that are naturally occurring in the groundwater. When construction is done on the watermains there is a temporary change in pressure and the minerals that have settled in the distribution system can be stirred up. Staff will continue to monitor water quality throughout this period.
If discoloured water is experienced, residents are urged to turn on a cold water tap that is not connected to the water softener nearest to their water meter and allow the water to flush slowly for several minutes until it runs clear.
If you have specialized plumbing fixtures such as softeners, filters, or treatment systems, please follow instructions provided by the manufacturer. If you have a fire prevention sprinkler system, please advise your fire protection company.
