Acorn Prize gives $500 to local charities over five months

GUELPH – The Acorn prize, offered through the Oak Tree project, will award a different charitable agency from Guelph/Wellington $500 each month from January to May 2019. 

The five nominated charities up for the January prize are: Guelph Public Library, Ed Video Media Arts Centre, Community Living Guelph-Wellington, Sunrise Theraputic Riding and Learning Centre and the Elora Centre for the Arts. 

As of Jan. 22 at 5pm the Sunrise Therapeutic Riding and Learning Centre out of Puslinch had recieved 44 per cent or 677 total votes. The Elora Centre for the Arts was a close second having received 38%, or 583 total votes. 

Voting runs from now until Jan. 25 at 8pm. 

The winning charity will be announced on Jan. 22. 

Those interested in taking part can cast their vote online at oaktreeguelph.ca/acorn-seedling-prizes/acorn-prize-voting. 

From the total charities that submitted their application in December, five applications are randomly chosen for each month’s $500 prize. 

The charities that don’t win will go into the running for the next month. 

From January to May, voting will be active each month from the second Monday at 8am to the third Friday at 8pm. 

Background

The Oak Tree Project was started by the Mactaggart family back in 2014 as a way to give back and strengthen community.
