Academy promotes arts, fitness through dance

Minto Dance Academy (MDA) is preparing for its 2015-16 season of dance, which will mark the academy’s 38th year of operation.

“As an academy operated by parent volunteers, we are unique in the dance community. Our desire has been to offer quality dance programs that both promote an appreciation of the arts and also encourage physical activity for children,” MDA officials state.

Operating from its studio at 68, Elora Street South, MDA offers a wide selection of disciplines. Dancers can choose from graded ballet through the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), tap, jazz, hip hop,tap, acro, contemporary, highland and musical theatre. To further enhance the creative experience dancers participate in a Christmas  and spring demonstrations to show their families and the community things they have learned. Full-scale recital

MDA has “an enthusiastic and professional faculty,” officials note.

The highland dance program has been under the direction of Jennifer Memmott for 15 years and returning for the fourth year and teaching tap and jazz classes is Jody Wightman.

The ballet program and syllabus is taught by Samantha Selihar, a  RAD (Royal Academy of Dance)  certified instructor, who will also be teaching some of the other disciplines as well.

Michayla Gilmore, a graduating student of the MDA will be joining the faculty this fall and will be teaching hip hop, acro  and intermediate contemporary.
