ELORA – No one was injured when a building in Elora collapsed on Monday afternoon.
Emergency crews were called to the scene, near the intersection of Metcalfe and Mill streets, on Feb. 24 at 3:07pm.
Centre Wellington deputy fire chief Jonathan Karn told the Advertiser a building adjacent to the Gorge Cinema collapsed, likely due to the weight of snow.
Wellington County OPP officials described the building as “an aged, stone-like building that was neither residential nor commercial in nature.”
Karn said the property is owned by Suncorp, which used to operate a Petro Canada station in the area.
Karn explained nobody was in the building at the time of collapse and no passersby were injured as the building fell in the direction of Francis Lane, near the Elora Christmas Market location.
He added Enbridge officials were working at the site as the property has a natural gas connection.
A representative of Kat Florence was also on site on Monday afternoon, as the debris will potentially impact the use of some of the company’s properties, Karn said.
Police officials said a damage/loss estimate is not yet available and they confirmed the incident is “being treated as non-suspicious at this time.”
