HARRISTON – The fourth annual Harriston Superior Monuments Headstone Hunt will the first hunt held as a part of local Culture Days activities.
This year’s hunt begins on Sept, 24 and all of the monuments on the entry form mark the resting places of veterans and the fallen.
There will be entry forms available at a number of locations around Minto as well as on the Facebook pages of Superior Memorials and Harriston Superior Monuments.
The hunt ends on Oct.22 at 5pm and Perth-Wellington MP John Nater is scheduled to assist with draws for the various cash prizes on Oct. 24. The draws will be held at noon at the Clifford Community Hall where Harriston Superior Monuments is hosting a celebration of the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The celebration is open to all.
Organizer John McVicar, of Harriston Superior Monuments, said the hall will be packed with memorabilia from the war and from the 1940s, as well as local musicians playing music fro the era and other activities and displays.
“What a wonderful journey this has been, from a little idea to what is now the only annual event of its kind in Canada,” states McVicar.
McVicar was working in the Cambridge office of Superior Memorials when he initiated a scavenger type hunt designed to take participants through local cemeteries to find specific monuments.
“They would answer questions on an entry form, get that form back to my office and be eligible for prizes. The owner of Superior thought it was a great idea to try out and even offered a thousand dollars in prize money,” notes McVicar, who brought the idea with him when he moved to Harriston four years ago.
