It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Eric Newell, 85, of Fergus, Ontario. Eric passed away peacefully at home on May 19, 2020, following a short illness, with his beloved, devoted wife of 62 years, Sheila, by his side. In addition to Sheila [née Hall], Eric is survived by two daughters, Amanda Newell and Katrina Newell-Wu; son-in-law Yung Wu; grandsons Philip Wilkins and Cedar Newell; grandaughter-in-law Natasha Wilkins and step great-grandchildren Kyla and Neven Duff; brother and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. All will miss him deeply. Born on December 18, 1934 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Eric and his family emigrated to Canada in spring 1964. Eric enjoyed a fulfilling career as an industrial engineer, working in aerospace for McDonnell Douglas Canada, DeHavilland, Boeing and Bombardier. A highlight of his career was working on the engineering team for the original CanadArm with SPAR Aerospace. Eric was known for his broad smile, sparkling green eyes, kindness, integrity and curious mind. He enjoyed singing and playing guitar, especially with his ex-pat friends on the weekend and always with Sheila singing alongside him. His sense of humour was a hallmark – he could always be counted on to tell a joke or two. Service and volunteerism were integral parts of his life. In keeping with “Red Ric’s” wishes, there will be no formal funeral service and he was immediately cremated.
