GUELPH – The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) is preparing for another busy kitten season this spring, despite COVID-19 measures in our community.
Every year, the humane society cares for approximately 400 kittens, many of whom are sick, injured, or orphaned. Under current provincial essential service restrictions, veterinarians are only able to provide urgent medical care, which does not include spay and neuter surgeries. As a result, GHS says it is preparing for more unexpected litters of kittens than in a typical year.
To get ready, GHS is launching their kitten fundraising campaign this week, with an overall goal to raise $40,000 to help kittens in our community. These funds ensure every kitten receives loving care, high quality food, spay/neuters, microchip, vaccines, and any specialized medical care necessary.
“Spring is our busiest time of the year for welcoming kittens and their moms into our care. Our team is expecting a greater than normal influx of kittens this year,” says Adrienne McBride, Executive Director at GHS.
“We are fortunate to have a large foster and donor network that we can reply on to support the care for so many kittens.”
GHS’s kitten foster network includes individuals trained to raise orphaned kittens. This commitment means bottle feeding and monitoring kittens around the clock. Foster volunteers also provide comfortable home environments to help socialize kittens, ensuring they grow up to be well-rounded family pets.
Amongst COVID-19, GHS’s work has not stopped. The organization is continuing to receive requests to care for vulnerable animals in the community, such as kittens and orphaned wildlife. GHS says that you can be assured that the dedicated team remains committed to ensuring all animals in our community are cared for and protected, despite the current pandemic situation.
