Obituary

Passed away peacefully, at home in Arthur, on Monday, May 11, 2020. Ian, age 73 years, was the loving partner of Faye Craig for the past thirteen years. Ian and Brigitte Turner are the loving parents of Brett (Julie), Dave (Danielle) and Sean. Ian was the dear grandfather of Hannah, Mason, Leah, Hudson, Noah and Ryan. He could often be found at the grandchildren’s activities and sporting events and he was always cheering them on. He is survived by his dear cousin Donna (late Bob) Geddes and the rest of the Geddes and Robertson family. He was predeceased by his parents William and Helen (nee Robinson) Turner. Ian grew up in Etobicoke, and he grew into a man that his family was very proud of. He graduated from York University where he played on the varsity Tennis and Rugby teams. He earned his Bachelor of Education at the University of Toronto. He spent the majority of his teaching career at Centre Wellington DHS and Mount Forest DHS/Wellington Heights. He is fondly remembered by former colleagues and students as a very passionate History teacher, coach, mentor and friend. He loved sports and he really enjoyed his old timers hockey and slow pitch days. He was also a very dedicated coach in the schools and in the community. There were many people that were blessed to learn from him on soccer, basketball, rugby, and hockey teams. He was very competitive and he had a gift for motivating and creating a resilient and strong team. He loved to go on trips with family, friends (and students while teaching) to explore local and national history, geography and culture. Upon retirement, he earned the Mt. Forest Legion Award as well as the Everyday Hero Award from the UGDSB. Ian really was a generous and civic-minded person, he was constantly contributing to his community. He is a past president of the Arthur Lions Club, one of the founding members of the local Trail Association, and a passionate member of the Arthur Historical Society. He loved planning and working on various trail projects with his friends and was very passionate and dedicated to his work on the historical murals in downtown Arthur. He was also an Elder at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Arthur. In 2017, he earned the Senate 150th Award for community leadership and volunteerism. In addition, he was a volunteer driver for the Canadian Cancer Society and a volunteer for Wellington Victim Services. The world needs more Ian Turners. The family will take part in a private interment at the Little Lake Cemetery, in Peterborough. A public memorial service will be held at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, donations to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Arthur or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
