ABOYNE – The last Gallery Concert of the season will take place March 15 at 2pm at the Wellington County Museum’s Exhibition Hall in Aboyne.
It features the Venturi Winds, who welcome a new member.
Ginny Scarfino makes her debut in the Concert Series on bassoon, accompanied by long time friend Brad Moggach on piano and the wind quintet.
The group will perform Gordon Jacob’s Sextet for Winds and Piano.
The piece was written for and performed by horn player Dennis Brain son of horn player Aubrey Brain.
Jacob, CBE (1895 to 1984) was a prolific English composer and teacher, officials say.
He was a professor at the Royal College of Music in London from 1924 to 1966.
As a prisoner during World War 1, Jacob studied harmony though a textbook in the camp library sparking a life-long musical career.
The balance of the program will feature the quintet in pieces by Cambini, Barthe, Ropartz, and an arrangement of a 20th century composition, Prairie Sketches by Sid Robinovitch, one of Canada’s most versatile and widely performed composers.
Patrons are invited to join the musicians after the concert for refreshments and conversation.
“Thanks to the organizers and performers of this season’s Gallery Concerts who have given freely of their time and talents in the 40th year of this affordable and enjoyable non-profit live music series,” officials say.
Watch for next year’s listings in August. Tickets are available at the door for $10. Youth tickets are $1.
“We are dedicating our performance to Barry Tuckwell, OBE who passed away this January,” officials say. “Barry was a friend of Dennis Brain and friend and mentor to horn players around the world.
“He had a 20-year career as first chair in the London Symphony, England (taking over from Dennis Brain in 1956). This was followed by a 20 year career as a soloist and recording artist.”
