Grateful for OPP

Dear Editor:

Stories like mine are the stories that should get in the paper about the OPP.

Almost three years ago my life was at the bottom. I came to Canada from Croatia with my husband and three kids. I did not know English, my children and I lived for 13 years with a person who abused us mentally and physically.

I couldn’t find the help, out of fear. The fear my husband put into me. I got to the point where my kids’ lives were at stake, so I sought help from OPP Fergus.

The OPP took care of my safety and the safety of my children; I felt safe as never in my life.

I will never have enough to say thank you to officer Jen Tschanz, who cried when I cried, who treated me and my children as family. OPP Fergus, led by officer Jen, brought us clothes, food, toys for the children. They donated coupons, paid for a summer camp for my kids, a swimming course. All to make them feel safe and loved. We survived because of them.

Jen was building my confidence, encouraging me at every step of the way. I still know today when my children walk that there is always someone looking at them. Officer Jen works with the kids at school; she gives her heart for her job. Her gleam in her eye tells how strong woman she is, full of love and compassion, dedication to her work.

Detective Jennifer Foley was also a huge support to my family. She gave more than her job description to make the children and I feel safe. These two women are my idols of kindness, devotion and strength. All OPP officers are my heroes! They gave me hope, security and faith that there is good.

My sons want to be police officers when they grow up because of the OPP. Thanks to OPP Fergus, my family is safe now. My children no longer live in fear of abuse. We live normal life.

When I had a refugee hearing for a stay in Canada, Officer Jen removed a bracelet from her hand and placed it on my hand. She told me everything will be fine. Tears were in her eyes. My children and I received protection from the Canadian government. From that day on (it’s been two years), I have been wearing the bracelet that Officer Jen gave me. It means so much to me, that police officer’s bracelet of love and hope. She a human with an angel’s soul.

As long as I live I can’t offer thanks enough for everything OPP did for me and my kids! Thank you for making that choice to protect and serve. Thank you for doing what so many of us aren’t brave enough to do. Thank you for keeping us safe!

Laura Spoljar,
Fergus
