Police beat: Centre Wellington man facing driving, fentanyl charges

FERGUS – A Centre Wellington man has been charged with possession of fentanyl.

On Feb. 9 at about 1:35am Wellington County OPP responded to a report that a pickup truck backed into a parked vehicle in Fergus and fled the scene.

Police say officers located the suspect vehicle, with “damage which was consistent with the witness’ statement,” on Wellington Road 18. The driver was arrested and police say he was in possession of a baggy of suspected purple fentanyl.

Matthew Lee Pyke, 33, of Centre Wellington, was charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident and possession of fentanyl. He is to appear in Guelph court on March 13.

Stolen tools, truck

MOUNT FOREST – On Feb. 11 at about 4am Wellington County OPP officers conducting a routine patrol discovered an abandoned pickup truck idling on Wellington Street East here.

Police say the truck was stolen from a residence,  on Durham Street East at about 1:15am that morning. About $3,000 in assorted tools were stolen from the truck. Anyone with information can contact the OPP or Crime Stoppers.

Domestic assault

FERGUS – On Jan. 30 at about 1:30am Wellington County OPP responded to a 911 call for a domestic dispute at a house on St. Andrew Street here.

Police say a woman was physically assaulted by her common-law partner and had locked herself in the bathroom prior to calling police.

A 29-year-old Fergus resident has been charged with spousal assault and will appear in Guelph court on March 6.
