GUELPH – The City of Guelph is seeking public feedback on its proposal to close the Dolime Quarry and allow new housing on the land, in order to protect local drinking water.
A deal was announced with the quarry owners last month.
The city held its first Our Community, Our Water open house at city hall Oct. 30, the first in-person opportunity for people to talk to project staff about the proposal.
The city is now asking the community, including residents from Guelph-Eramosa Township, to provide feedback.
People can do so online at haveyoursay.guelph.ca until Nov. 30.
“Council is very interested in what people think will be the benefits and challenges of this proposal should they approve it…” said Jennifer Rose, general manager of environmental services.
Sessions will be held Nov. 9, from 9am to 1pm at the West End Community Centre, 21 Imperial Road South and Nov. 16, 1-5pm, at Old Quebec Street Mall, 55 Wyndham St. N.
The final open house is Nov. 26, 2-4pm and 6-8pm at Holiday Inn Guelph Hotel and Conference Centre, Wellington Room, 601 Scottsdale Drive, Guelph.
The proposal is to bring the site, currently in Guelph-Eramosa Township, into the City of Guelph’s municipal boundary.
The city would take control of the quarry’s water supply, build an on-site water management system, and create a new mixed-use residential neighbourhood.This would reduce pressure on groundwater supplies for both the city and township.
The city will summarize community feedback in a public report, to be shared with council in early 2020.
