WELLINGTON CTY. – Wellington Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) Grade 3 students in math and Upper Grand District School Board Grade 6 students in reading are the only elementary cohorts to beat the provincial average in the latest Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) testing.
Grade 3
According to the 2018-19 EQAO results, 61 per cent of Wellington Catholic Grade 3 students met the provincial expectations in math, compared to 58% provincially.
“Our Catholic schools remain committed to excellence and improving outcomes for all students,” said WCDSB director of education Tamara Nugent.
“We are proud of the academic achievement of our students as they progress though the grades and the commitment of our staff in providing meaningful educational experiences in each of our schools.”
In reading and writing, the percentage of Wellington Catholic Grade 3 students who met provincial expectations include: 73% in reading (74% provincially) and 67% in writing (69% provincially).
The percentage of UGDSB students who met provincial expectations was also lower than the provincial average: 71% in reading, 65% in writing and 51% in math.
Similarly the percentage of Grade 3 students in both school boards who met or exceeded the provincial averages decreased in every category from the 2017-18 school year:
– Wellington Catholic: 74% in reading, 73% in writing and 67% in math;
– UGDSB: 74% in reading, 65% in writing and 51% in math.
In both school boards female students outperformed the males in reading and writing, while male students outperformed female students in math.
In WCDSB 75% of Grade 3 girls met the provincial average in reading, 71% in writing and 58% in math, compared to 70%, 63% and 63% respectively, for the boys.
In the UGDSB, 74% of Grade 3 girls met the provincial average in reading, 71% in writing and 48% in math, compared to 68%, 59% and 54% respectively for the boys.
Grade 6
According to the 2018-19 EQAO results a higher percentage of UGDSB Grade 6 students, 82%, met the provincial expectations in reading than provincially, 81%.
However, in both writing and math, the provincial averages (82% and 48% respectively) were higher than UGDSB averages (80% and 47% respectively).
The percentage of WCDSB Grade 6 students who met provincial expectations was below the provincial average in all categories: reading 79%, writing 78% and math 46%.
However, the percentage of WCDSB Grade 6 students who met the provincial average exceeded the 2017-18 percentage in every category: 78% in reading; 77% in writing and 45% in math.
Alternatively, the percentage of UGDSB Grade 6 students who met provincial expectations decreased in all areas from the 2017-18 test except for in writing, where it remained stagnant: 83% in reading, 80% in writing and 48% in math.
In the UGDSB girls outperformed their male counterparts in every category:
– Girls: 86% in reading, 87% in writing and 48% in math; and
– Boys: 78% in reading, 73% in writing and 46% in math.
In the WCDSB girls outperformed males in reading (girls: 83% and boys: 75%) and writing (girls: 85% and boys: 71%) and boys outperformed girls in math (48% and 43% respectively.)
“The collection and reporting of this data is the necessary first step in the process of critical analysis,” UGDSB officials state in a press release.
“The data is used by school administrators and teachers to develop school improvement plans and specific action plans with the goal of higher achievement.”
