Initiative encourages respectful discussion of federal election

GUELPH – A new initiative that organizers believe will be a positive force for change in today’s partisan political environment will be unveiled here on Sept. 11.

The Better Ballot Campaign will ask Canadians to stand together for civil discussion and respectful debate during the 2019 federal election.

The event is hosted by the local chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women.

Speakers will be  Rev. John Borthwick and Hannah Ruuth.

Borthwick has served the congregation of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Guelph since 2003.

He also serves as volunteer chaplain for Guelph Police Service and the University of Guelph Campus Community Police.

“He is a passionate advocate for housing for all and poverty elimination,” organizers note.

Ruuth was born and raised in Tecumseh, Ontario and is currently studying Public Management at the University of Guelph. She spent her summer in Ottawa, interning at the Prime Minister’s Office.

Ruuth represented the riding of Windsor-Tecumseh in Equal Voice’s Daughter of the Vote initiative and serves on the Ministry of Education’s Student Advisory Council.

Anyone planning to attend should rsvp to: Teresa McKeeman at: Pledge@betterballot.ca.

The event will begin at 5 pm at 10C Shared Space, 42 Carden Street, Guelph.
